Mellanee Welty (Track and Field, 1996-2001)

A 1999 All-American in the heptathlon, Welty joined the Shocker squad in 1996. As a sophomore, she finished first at the MVC Outdoor Championship in the heptathlon. During her senior year, she won three events at the MVC Outdoor Championships (100 high hurdles, high jump and pole vault) and scored nearly half of the Shocker's points, helping the women to a third-place finish. Welty ended her collegiate career with a 14th place finish in the heptathlon at the 2000 NCAA Championships, and was also named "The Most Valuable Field Athlete" at the MVC Outdoor Championships for the second-consecutive year...An excellent student, she was also a two-time academic All-American...A two-time Drake Relays Heptathlon Champion, she also won eight MVC titles and scored more than 40 points at the MVC Outdoor Championship for the Shockers in both her junior and senior seasons...Named the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission College Female Athlete of the Year... A Wichita, Kan., native... Inducted, 2006.
