Ray Morrison (Football, 1946-50)

6/23/2002 3:35:00 PM

After starring in six-man football at Milton, KS., he became the starting fullback and halfback at the University of Wichita in 1946 and 1947. In 1948, he was a second-team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection. During his playing career under coaches Ralph Graham and Jim Trimble, he won four football letters and two baseball letters. He gained his nickname ("Scooter") for his style of broken field running while holding the ball in front of him. After graduation, Morrison returned to the University of Wichita as head baseball coach and freshman football coach from 1957-60. Despite his small size, Morrison frequently cleared the way as a blocker for charter Hall of Fame inductee Linwood Sexton. He rushed for over 100 yards twice in 1948 (137 vs. Utah State and 146 vs. Bradley) and led the team in total offense with 806 yards that same year. He averaged over seven yards a carry during his college career. He was a member of the 1948 Raisin Bowl squad which posted a 7-4 record under coach Ralph Graham. Inducted, 1982.
