WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State's softball team swept the Saturday portion of the 2015 Shocker Invitational on Saturday inside Wilkins Stadium in what was a doubleheader. First, the Shockers defeated South Dakota 14-5 in five innings, and then earned a 7-1 victory against Nebraska.

With both wins, Wichita State moved to 13-9 heading into the final day of the 2015 Shocker Invitational, when they face Nebraska on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. inside Wilkins Stadium.

Game 1—Wichita State 14, South Dakota 5 (5 Innings)

By scoring 14 runs against South Dakota, this is the second time the Shockers have scored 14 this season. They previously scored 14 when they defeated IPFW on Feb. 14 at the Texas Classic in Austin, Texas by a score of 14-0.

This also was the third game of the year in which the Shockers have scored 10 or more runs, and the second straight game the Shockers scored 10 or more runs against the Coyotes. On Friday evening, the Shockers won 12-3 against South Dakota.

Freshman Kelsey Sterneker (2-1) picked up her second win of her college career. She threw 3.1 innings and allowed four runs (all earned) on three hits, walked one and struck out one. Through the first three innings, Sterneker did not allow a hit while allowing her only walk.

Rachel Cue (3-4) took the loss. She threw 3.1 innings, allowed nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits, walked two and struck out none.

Brittany Fortner and Paige Mason led the way for Shockers with one grand slam apiece. Fortner went 3-4 with her grand slam and a run scored, as Mason's grand slam came in pinch-hit fashion and was her only at-bat in the game.

Katie Dinning went 2-3 with a double, a solo home run, and a RBI to lead the Coyotes.

Wichita State used a double-steal by Jaegers (who stole second) and Mackenzie Wright (who stole home) to put the Shockers on top, 1-0 through the top half of the second inning.

Wichita State used a 13 run top of the fourth inning on nine hits to take a 14-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth.

The Coyotes scored four in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Shocker lead to 14-4 after four innings. Allie Daly reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Yvon Minogue to score their first run of the game. Morgan Hancock doubled in Dinning, and then Daly scored after a Sydney Hancock groundout to first. Shelby Keil later singled to left with two outs, knocking in Morgan Hancock to make the game 14-4 in favor of the Shockers.

Dinning hit her solo home run in the top of the fifth to cut the Shocker lead to 14-5, but Katie Malone finished the seventh inning, her only inning of work against South Dakota on Saturday, to secure the 14-5 win for the Shockers.

Game 2—Wichita State 7, Nebraska 1

Katie Malone (7-4) picked up her second victory in two days. This time, she pitched a complete game, pitching all seven innings. She also allowed just one run (earned) on three this, walked none and struck out six.

Cassie McClure (3-2) took the loss. She pitched two innings, allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits, walked two and struck out none. McClure also was 2-3 with a home run, and was responsible for the only Cornhusker run of the game.

Liz Broyles went 2-4 with two home runs, two RBI, and two runs scored. Mackenzie Wright and Erin Carney each hit solo home runs as well. Wichita State's four home runs against Nebraska were the most in one game since April 17, 2011 when the Shockers hit four against then MVC rival Creighton in Omaha, Neb.

The Shockers scored one in each of the first two innings, and three in the third to take a 5-0 lead into the top of the fourth.

Kelli Spring scored the first run of the game after Broyles singled and advanced to second after Fortner was tagged out in a rundown. Wichita State took a 1-0 lead into the top of the second inning.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the second, Spring walked in a run after a full count, scoring Carney who was on third to give the Shockers a 2-0 lead.

Wichita State used back-to-back home runs by Broyles and Wright to start the bottom of the third, pushing the Shocker lead to 4-0. A couple batters later, Paige Mason reached base after a fly ball to left was dropped, scoring Jaegers to make the score 5-0 in favor of the Shockers.

Nebraska answered with a run of their own in the top of the fourth. McClure hit a solo home run to deep right center to get the Cornhuskers on the board, but Wichita State was still up 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth.

Broyles hit her second solo home run in as many as bats when she launched a solo home run to deep left field during the bottom of the fourth, regaining the five run lead they previously had at the beginning of the fourth. Wichita State took a 6-1 lead from the Broyles solo home run.

Carney led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run, her first of the year, that made the score 7-1 in favor of the Shockers, which later became the final score.

Wichita State looks to complete the 2015 Shocker Invitational sweep when they face Nebraska on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. inside Wilkins Stadium.
