WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State men's tennis team defeated nationally-ranked George Washington (ITA No. 61) by a score of 6-1, Sunday morning indoors at Genesis.
WSU (5-2) took the doubles point, then won three of the top four singles flights to clinch the dual victory.
Tin Ostojic (ITA No. 114) notched the Shockers' fourth point, winning in three sets over Daniel Zelenkov, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to improve to 12-3 on the year. He'll be in line for a big boost in this week's updated ITA rankings.
Ilija Cuic won in straight sets over Chris Fletcher at No. 3, 6-1, 7-5, and Guillermo de Vilchez closed strong in a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4 over Cahit Kapukiran.
Miroslav Herzan rallied from 6-1 down in a first-set tiebreaker to win 8-6 and survived another tiebreaker in the second set, 7-1, to win 7-6, 7-6.
Jocelyn Devilliers won a tightly contested match at No. 6 singles, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
WSU's only loss came at the No. 2 spot, where Francisco Dias (No. 109) downed Tomislav Gregurovic, 6-0, 6-7, 6-2.
The Shockers won each of the first two completed doubles matches to. The team of Ostojic and Gregurovic (ITA No. 17) made quick work of Zelenkov and Dias, 6-3, while Devilliers and Herzan put away Kapukiran and Hadjigeorgiou, 6-1.
Cuic and de Vilchez's match was tied 3-all when WSU clinched its doubles point.
The Shockers are back in action next Saturday when they host UMKC, beginning at 2:00 p.m. CT at Genesis.
