Box Score WICHITA, Kan.- Fred VanVleet completed a triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists to lead the Wichita State men's basketball team past Missouri State 78-35 on Saturday night inside Charles Koch Arena.
Ron Baker led the way in scoring for the Shockers with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 3-for-6 from three-point land. Darius Carter and Shaquille Morris also scored in double figures with 10 points apiece.
Carter started the scoring for Wichita State with a bucket in the paint off an assist from VanVleet. Baker's layup put the score at 4-0 Shockers before Missouri State hit its first shot of the game, a three at the 16:07 mark, to cut the Wichita State lead to 4-3. Wessel answered with a three of his own to put his team up four, 7-3.
Baker hit his first three of the game and then a layup by Shaquille Morris capped a 10-0 run for Wichita State and gave the Shockers a 14-3 advantage with 13:25 to go in the first half. Two minutes later, back-to-back jumpers from VanVleet and Morris stretched the lead to 18-7.
Later, a Tekele Cotton floater followed by another Morris jumper capped a 6-0 run for Wichita State,
putting them up 26-11 at the 5:27 mark.
The Shockers closed the half on an 11-0 run to take a 37-13 lead into the locker room. Five different Wichita State players scored during the run.
Baker led the scoring for the Shockers during the first 20 minutes with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting. Morris added eight points, while Fred VanVleet scored five points, pulled down eight rebounds and handed out eight assists. As a team, Wichita State shot 14-for-34 (.412) from the floor and held the Bears to 5-of-26 (.192) shooting. The Shocker defense forced nine first-half turnovers and the offense out-scored the Bears in the paint 12-2.
Baker hit back-to-back threes to open the second half for Wichita State and sparked a 15-0 run for the Shockers in the opening minutes of the half. VanVleet's assist to Carter for an alley-oop dunk at the 17:11 mark gave the junior guard a new career-high in assists with 11. The end of the run saw the Shockers go ahead 52-15 with a little more than 14 minutes remaining.
Less than a minute later, VanVleet hit a three to cement the first triple-double for a Wichita State player in 43 years. Terry Benton had the last triple-double for Wichita State when he scored 20 points, pulled down 20 rebounds and handed out 10 assists against Tulsa on Jan. 29, 1972.
VanVleet's effort was the first in the Valley since Evansville's Troy Taylor scored 10 points to go along with 10 rebounds and 10 assists against Creighton on Dec. 29, 2012.
Gregg Marshall played his reserve players for much of the last 10 minutes of the half. Five consecutive points from Rauno Nurger at the 8:20 mark put the Shocker lead at 41, 67-26. John Robert Simon kept the lead at 41 on a three-pointer with a little more than six minutes to go in the game and layup by Corey Henderson at the 2:36 mark gave Wichita State its biggest lead of the game, 76-30.
The Shockers went on to win 78-35, shooting 31-for-70 (.443) for the game, while holding the Bears to 13-for-52 (.250) shooting.
Wichita State will welcome Indiana State to Charles Koch Arena on Wednesday for a game set to tip at 7 p.m. The game can be viewed on Kansas 22.
