WICHITA, Kan. – No. 43 Wichita State swept dual matches from previously unbeaten Colorado and UMKC, Friday at the Wichita Country Club Indoor Courts by scores of 5-2 and 5-0.
WSU (7-1) went a combined 9-1 in singles and split its four doubles matches.
In its early dual with Colorado, the Shockers twice squandered match-point, costing them the doubles point and one additional point at No. 2 singles. Yet, they did more than enough to make up for it at the other five singles slots.
Colorado (4-1) claimed wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles to take an early 1-0 points lead. The former was especially painful after WSU led 5-4 in the match.
WSU countered with a pair of straight-set singles victories at No. 3 and 5 by Gabriela Porubin (6-1, 6-2) and Lucia Kovalova (6-2, 7-5) to go up 2-1.
Three other singles matches went the distance. Julia Schiller started and finished strong in a 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 win over Tina Bokhua at No. 1, and Abby Stevens provided the clincher, coming from behind to beat Alexandra Aiello, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4.
Colorado's Julyette Steur salvaged a win at No. 2, winning a battle with Rebecca Pedrazzi, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6.
Aleksandra Trifunovic provided the final margin with a quick, 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6, closing the book on a three-hour marathon.
The Shockers needed only half the time to take down UMKC in a match that featured experimental scoring (four singles and one doubles match, all played simultaneously).
The doubles team of Abby Stevens and Giulia Guidetti finished up first, making short work of Allie Schulte and Amelie Amsallem, 6-1, 6-2.
Kovalova and Trifunovic earned quick wins at Nos. 2 and 3, downing Maddie Schulte and Mariam Kurasbediani in straight-sets.
Schiller worked overtime at No. 1 singles after losing her first set 6-2 to Dimitra Stavrianakou but bounced back to win the last two sets, 6-2 and 6-2.
“Against Colorado, we dropped the doubles point but bounced back really well. We had competitive matches across the board all day,” WSU head coach, Colin Foster said. “We're continuing to build confidence and trust in our games for those crucial moments where sets are won and lost.”
WSU's next home action comes Thursday, Feb. 12 against Kansas at the Wichita Country Club. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
