NORMAN, Okla. – The Wichita State women's tennis team (ITA No. 40) fell by a count of 5-2 to No. 36 Oklahoma Saturday afternoon at the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion.
WSU (8-2) saw its six-match winning streak come to an end. OU improved to 5-1.
OU claimed the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 by scores of 6-3 and 6-1.
The Sooners made it a 2-0 overall lead when Zita Enbroks defeated Aleks Trifunovic at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-0.
Abby Stevens won a tiebreaker to sweep Morgan Chumney at No. 4 (6-3, 7-6), as the Shockers moved to within 2-1.
The Sooners returned the favor at No. 1 singles when Lily Miyazaki took out Julia Schiller, 6-3, 7-6.
Lucia Kovalova won her first set at No. 5 but couldn't quite finish, in a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 setback to Christie Bregante, officially clinching the win for the Sooners.
Gabriela Porubin notched the Shockers second and final point at No. 3, defeating Abbi Melrose in a close match, 7-5, 7-6.
Simran Sethi brought the dual to close for OU with a hotly contested win over WSU's Rebecca Pedrazzi, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
“To be 8-2 wit the schedule we've played is nothing to hang our heads about,” WSU head coach Colin Foster said. “Certainly we had our chances today. Abby and Gaby did very well to close out a couple of determined opponents in straight sets. Everyone fought hard, but it just wasn't meant to be today.”
WSU continues on the road next week on Thursday and Saturday with matches at Santa Clara and Fresno State.
