MVC Individual Championships: Tournament Central | Draws

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Highlighted by individual singles titles by Abby Stevens, Tanaporn Thongsing and Luca Pump, the Wichita State women's tennis team posted top-three finishes in all seven singles flights, Sunday, at the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships.
 
Stevens won the first flight, becoming just the sixth player in MVC/Gateway Conference history to repeat as champion in the top draw. A WSU player has now won the first flight in each of the last three years and in six of the past seven overall.
 
Stevens swept all three of her tournament matches in straight-sets, closing out Illinois State's Marcia Tere-Apisah for the title, 6-4, 6-2.
 
Thongsing made a strong impression in her second collegiate tournament. The sophomore dropped just seven total games in six sets and claimed the third-flight crown with a 6-1, 6-1 sweep of Drake's Summer Brills.
 
In the fourth flight, Luca Pump won the second MVC Individual title of her career. A champion in the fifth flight in 2014, Pump to a 6-1, 6-1 win of her own over Chanel Scudiero of Illinois State.
 
Two other championship appearances ended on a sour note for WSU. Giulia Guidetti's bid for a title in flight No. 2 came up short against Drake's Adrienne Jensen, 6-3, 7-5.
 
Whitley Quan fell to Yana Golovkina of Southern Illinois, 6-2, 6-1.
 
In third-place matches, Summer Schlotterback and Amber Zimmerman ended on a positive note with victories in the fifth and seventh flights.
 
Guidetti and Stevens earned WSU's lone Sunday doubles win, fending off host Bradley's team of Thai and de Lasa, 8-4.
 
Pump and Thongsing fell to Illinois State's Golanova and Kustkova in the flight No. 2 championship, and Schlotterback and Quan came up short in the flight No. 3 third-place match.
 
WSU continues action at the ITA All-American Championships this week. Its next full squad action comes Oct. 15-19 in Stillwater, Okla. at the ITA Central Region Championships.
