FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Sergio de Vilchez and Haru Inoue paved the way for the Wichita State men's tennis team on Thursday during the first day of play at the USTA/ITA Central Regional by advancing through the first two rounds of singles play.

Inoue and de Vilchez each won their two matches and will continue in the round of 32 on Friday. Inoue took down Iowa's Nils Hallenstrand in the first round in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3, and then Saint Louis' Charlie Perry in the second round by scores of 6-2 and 6-4.

Sergio de Vilchez started the day with a win versus Drake's Ben Wood, 6-3, 6-3, before finishing the afternoon with a three-set win over Arkansas' Johan den Tom, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(5).

Eddie Stoica and Miroslav Herzan won their first round matches, but were eliminated from singles play after falling in the second round. Stoica defeated Drake's Tom Hands, 6-4, 0-6, 6-1, before falling to Oklahoma State's Tristan Meraut, 7-6, 6-4. Herzan won in three sets over SIU Edwardsville's Tristan Houle, 6-1, 6-7, 6-4, and then fell to Oklahoma State's Lukas Finzelberg, 7-5, 6-2.

Vitor Mendes, Austin Williams and Jocelyn Devilliers were downed in the first round and will play a consolation match Friday.

Play is scheduled to resume Friday morning at 9 a.m. CST with both singles and doubles action to take place throughout the day at the George M. Billingsley Tennis Center.
