NORMAL, Ill. – Sophomore Cacy Williams went 1-for-2 with three walks and a school record-breaking 16th home run, as the Wichita State softball team completed the sweep of Illinois State with a 10-4 victory at Marian Kneer Stadium Sunday.
Brittany Fortner went 3-for-4 on the day with two RBIs, a walk and two runs scored, as Ashley Johnson hit 3-for-4 with a triple and a run scored in the victory.
The Shockers wasted no time at the plate Sunday, scoring two runs in the first inning on a Fortner home run to center field to take the early 2-0 lead.
Williams broke the school record for home runs in a season in the second inning, hitting her 16th over the center field wall to give Wichita State a 3-0 advantage.
Illinois State hit a home run of its own in the bottom of the third inning to left field, cutting the Wichita State lead, 3-1, before adding another run on a groundout to first base to get within one, 3-2, going into the fourth inning.
Ashley Johnson tripled to the center field wall to start things off for the Shockers in the fourth, with Williams drawing a walk and stealing second to put runners in scoring position once again. The Illinois State defense backed up the pitching staff, however, holding Wichita State scoreless in the inning.
The Redbirds tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on a leadoff home run to center field but the Shocker defense retired the next three batters to get out of the inning.
Jenni Brooks replaced Sloan Anderson in the fifth after the lefty allowed three hits and three runs, striking out two in four innings.
Johnson and Spring hit back-to-back singles in the sixth to put runners in scoring position for Wichita State before Williams drew a walk to load the bases. Luellen hit a two-run double immediately following to regain the Shockers lead, 5-3, before Fortner drew a walk to load the bases once again. Paige Mason followed with a two-run double and Broyles grounded out to first base, bringing in another to give Wichita State an 8-3 advantage. Macklin Hitz pinch-hit a RBI single up the middle to extend the lead, 9-3, giving Brooks a cushion in the bottom half of the inning.
Both teams added a run in the final inning, giving the Shockers a 10-4 victory and the sweep of the Redbirds.
Brooks picked up the win for Wichita State, allowing just two hits and one run, while striking out two in three innings.
The Shockers will go into the MVC Tournament May 8-10 as the No. 1 seed and will play Fri., May 9 at 12:05 p.m. against the winner of game three.
