HOUSTON - Hunter Veith and Gavyn Yetter highlighted the Shockers performance on day one of the Shirley Crow Meet on the Campus of Rice University. Veith enters the final day of competition in the lead of the men's decathlon after scoring 3,897 points in the first five events of the competition. Yetter will begin day two of the women's heptathlon in second place with 3,149 points.
Men's Decathlon:
The 100-meter dash started the men's decathlon competition and Veith and Drew Johnson posted the best times for Wichita State. Veith recorded a 100-meter dash time of 11.15 seconds and Johnson clocked in at 11.24 seconds.
Veith would go on and have the best long jump out of the 14 decathletes at the meet after his mark measured 23-8 1/4. Tobias Boese, who will start day two in third place, jumped 22-2 1/4 for the next best jump by a Shocker.
Boese would then have the second best throw in the field and the best among Wichita State decathletes in the shot put. His throw landed at the 41-11 1/4 mark and earned 654 points.
The high jump event of the competition was owned by Veith. Veith jumped a personal best of 6-10 for 878 points to give him his second decathlon event that he recorded the best score.
Kyle Troxler, the MVC Indoor Heptathlon champion, won the 400-meter dash after crossing the finish line in 50 seconds flat for 815 points.
Women's Heptathlon:
In the women's 100-meter hurdles, Breanne Boreman and Yetter finished second and third with times of 14.50 seconds and 14.52 seconds, respectively. Boreman scored 909 points while Yetter scored 906 points.
Jaclyn Abrahmian cleared 5-5 1/2 in the high jump portion of the heptathlon competition. Abrahamian's height was the best among Shocker heptathletes.
Yetter and Boreman then went second and third again only this time in the shot put throw. Yetter's throw measured 40-6 1/4 while Boreman's throw recorded 38-3 1/2.
In the final event of day one for the women's heptathlon, Yetter earned 858 points after posting a 200-meter dash time of 25.32 seconds. Jenny Pinkston followed and crossed the finish line in 25.98 seconds.
