WBB: Shockers Take Down Bulldogs 70-61

DES MOINES, Iowa- Alex Harden scored 22 points, grabbed seven rebounds and handed out eight assists to lead No.24 Wichita State past Drake 70-61 on Friday night inside the Knapp Center.

The win ties head coach Jody Adams with Linda Hargrove on the all-time wins list at Wichita State with 113.

Michelle Price added 13 points, shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. Alie Decker also scored 13 points, hitting four shots from behind the arc.

Drake hit the first bucket of the game, a three-pointer at the 17:21 mark and held the lead until Michaela Dapprich connected on a layup to give the Shockers a 15-14 advantage with less than eight minutes to go in the first half.

Alex Harden then scored the final 10 points of the half for Wichita State, and her two free-throws with 30 seconds remaining in the half cut the Bulldog lead to one, 26-25, going into the locker room.

The Shockers shot 9-for-26 (.346) from the floor and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the first 20 minutes. Harden led the way with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while grabbing four rebounds. Kelsey Jacobs added three blocks in the first half.

Harden and Jacobs hit back-to-back two-point jumpers to open the second half for Wichita State, which saw them go ahead 29-26 at the 18:57 mark. Alie Decker hit her first three-pointer of the game at the 16:05 mark to keep the Shocker lead at three, 34-31.

After the Bulldogs answered and went up by as many as four, a layup by Jamillah Bonner started a 9-0 run for the Shockers that was capped by another shot from behind the arc by Decker to put Wichita State up 51-42 with 10:06 remaining in the game.

Decker nailed another three-pointer and then a jumper at the free-throw line from Michelle Price at the put the Shockers up 60-49 at the 6:35 mark. The lead never dipped below eight the rest of the way and Wichita State connected on its free throws to seal the game.

The Shockers will now head to Cedar Falls, Iowa to take on Northern Iowa on Sunday at 2 p.m. The game can be heard on KFH 1240AM/98.7FM.
