West Lafayette, Ind. – The Wichita State University men's golf team started out strong and played well enough to stick in third place after 36 holes at the Purdue Boilermaker Invitational. Play started late due to frost at Kampen Course.
Junior Calvin Pearson, playing unattached, produced the top score by a Shocker on Saturday, carding a 1-under 143 to tie for fifth. He is three strokes behind the leader, Joseph Winslow of Iowa. Pearson turned in an even par 72 the first time through the course and shaved a stroke over the second round of 18 holes to climb into the top five.
Louis Cohen Boyer cruised through the first round with a 2-under 70 to tie for second but a 75 in the afternoon session dropped him into a tie for 14th. Teammate Hunter Sparks joined Boyer with two solid rounds of play (73-72=145).
Rafa Becker and Tyler Gann are tied for 27th at 5-over.
The third round begins Sunday morning, though frost is once again predicted in the forecast and could push back the start time.
