WICHITA, Kan. -
Wichita State dropped a pair of games Wednesday evening at Wilkins Stadium to
neighboring UMKC by scores of 4-2 and 7-0.
In both games the Shockers were unable to solve the mystery
that was Roos starting pitcher Deanna Friese. The senior pitched two complete
games and had a combined 27 strikeouts including 15 in Wednesday's opener.
In the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader the Shockers
undoing came in the top of the fifth inning when three errors mixed with three
UMKC hits resulted in four unearned runs off Wichita State starter Katie
Armagost. Armagost was impressive in her eighth complete game performance of
the season striking out five batters against a single walk, but could not
offset the damage done in the fifth inning.
Laura Vickers went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles to collect
half of WSU's hits.
In Wednesday's second game the Roos picked up runs in the
second and third inning to take a 2-0 lead while Friese continued to stymie the
Shocker hitters.
UMKC pushed across two more runs in the fifth including a
solo home run from Emily Ott.
The Roos added another three runs in the top of the sixth
inning to take a 7-0 lead and put the game out of reach.
Wichita State is next in action when they open Missouri
Valley Conference with a Saturday doubleheader against Indiana State at 12 p.m.
The three-game series concludes Sunday at 12 p.m. at Wilkins Stadium.
