ST. LOUIS- The Missouri Valley Conference has named Wichita
State distance runner Aliphine Tuliamuk-Bolton its Women's Track Athlete of the
Week for the week of Feb. 11.
This marks the second time in the 2013 season that
Tuliamuk-Bolton has earned this award. She has won the honor 11 times during
her career at Wichita State.
Tuliamuk-Bolton fought her way to second place in a
competitive 5,000m race against the defending national champion at the Iowa
State Classic this past weekend, completing her 5,000m run in 15 minutes, 25.47
seconds.
This performance shattered Tuliamuk-Bolton's own Wichita
State and MVC record in the 5,000m run, topping her previous best by over ten
seconds.
The senior now ranks first in the MVC in the mile, the
3,000m run, and the 5,000m run. Her historic run at the Iowa State Classic
stands over 1:15 faster than her closest competition in the MVC.
Tuliamuk-Bolton's record setting race also ranks as the
fifth fastest time in NCAA history. She currently owns the second fastest time
in the world for 2013.
Competing in her final season at Wichita State,
Tuliamuk-Bolton already holds four WSU and MVC records, setting the benchmark
in the 3,000m, indoor 5,000m, outdoor 5,000m, and 10,000m races.
Tuliamuk-Bolton has won seven conference championships and
has earned NCAA First-Team All-American Honors in track & field eight times
in her decorated career.
Ranked 20th in the nation, Tuliamuk-Bolton and
the rest of Wichita State Women's Track & Field Team will, along with WSU's
men's team, send athletes to meets at Kansas State and Nebraska this weekend.
Tuliamuk-Bolton will try to add more conference
championships to her résumé when she and the rest of the Shocker Track &
Field Team travel to the MVC Indoor Championships Feb. 23-24.
