Box Score WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State used 16 kills from Sam Sanders to earn a thrilling five-set win over Louisville. The Shockers (17-4) won by scores of 20-25, 25-22, 25-21, 22-25 and 15-10.
Ashlyn Driskill added 12 kills, while Ashley Andrade had 11. Chelsey Feekin had 51 assists and Katie Reilly had 17 digs.
Louisville used a 4-0 run to take a 6-4 lead in the first set. The Shockers tied it at eight on a service ace from Chelsey Feekin, but the Cardinals used an 8-1 run to go in front 18-11 and won the set 25-20.
The second set went back-and-forth until the Cardinals took a 13-10 lead. The Shockers came back to tie it at 20 on a kill by Sam Sanders and took a 22-21 lead after kills from Ashley Andrade and Sanders. WSU won the set 25-22 after kills from Sanders and Elizabeth Field.
Back-to-back aces from Sanders gave the Shocks an early 6-2 lead in the third set, but UL used a 4-1 run to pull within 7-6. The set went back-and-forth until the Shocks took a 21-19 lead on a kill from Sanders. A service ace from Katie Reilly and another Sanders kill made the score 23-20 and WSU won the set 25-21 on a Sanders kill.
The Cardinals took an early 6-2 lead in the fourth set, but the Shockers came back to tie it at 11 on a block from Andrade and Ashlyn Driskill. A Reilly service ace gave the Shocks a 14-11 lead, but the Cardinals tied it at 14 with a block. UL took a 17-15 lead, but the Shocks tied it at 18 on a block from Field. The two teams traded points until the Cardinals pulled away late for a 25-22 win.
WSU raced out to a 4-0 lead in the fifth set behind two blocks and kills from Andrade and Driskill. The Cardinals cut the lead to 4-2, but two more Shocker blocks put WSU in front 7-2. A Cardinal service ace cut the lead to 8-5, but another block gave the Shocks a 10-6 lead. Another Cardinal ace cut the lead to 11-8, but the Shockers reached match point at 14-9 on a kill from Feekin and won 15-10 on a kill from Driskill.
The Shockers are next in action on Fri., Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. against Bradley inside Charles Koch Arena.
