Box Score DALLAS, Texas - Wichita State earned a thrilling come from
behind win in five sets over SMU in the first match of the SMU Doubletree
Classic. The Shockers won by scores of
16-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23 and 15-6.
Emily Adney led the Shockers with 13 kills, while Ashley
Andrade added 12 kills. Chelsey Feekin
had six kills, 42 assists and six digs, while Jackie Church had 22 digs.
The Shockers took a 2-1 lead in the first set, but SMU
quickly took a 5-2 lead with a 4-0 run.
A Mustang hitting error pulled WSU to within 8-7, but that was as close
as it got as SMU ran away with a 25-16 win.
After falling behind 9-7 in the second set, the Shockers
reeled off a 4-0 run to take an 11-9 lead.
SMU tied it at 11, but another 5-0 Shocker run gave WSU a 16-11
lead. Back-to-back Shocker blocks
increased the lead to 20-14 and WSU closed out the set with back-to-back kills
by Ashley Andrade to win 25-18.
WSU took an early 6-1 lead in the third set and used a 3-0
run to take a 10-5 lead. SMU came
roaring back to pull within 12-11. A
kill by Sam Sanders put WSU up 16-13, but the Mustangs scored five-straight to
take an 18-16 lead. WSU tied it at 18
and again at 21, but SMU held on to win 25-23.
SMU took a 6-4 lead with back-to-back service aces in the
fourth set. A block by Ashlyn Driskill
and a kill by Chelsey Feekin tied the score at seven. The set went back-and-forth until
three-straight Mustang kills put SMU up 18-16.
The Shockers tied it at 19 after back-to-back kills by Sanders and the
two teams traded points until a Feekin kill and SMU hitting error gave WSU a
25-23 win.
WSU jumped out quickly in the fifth set. Back-to-back Mustang hitting errors gave WSU
a 5-2 lead and after a block by Elizabeth Field and Feekin, the Shocks led 8-3
at the break. A service ace by Emily
Adney made the score 11-4 and WSU finished off the set 15-6 on a service ace by
Jackie Church.
The Shockers are next in action on Fri., Sept. 7 against
Auburn at 5 p.m.
