Box Score NORMAL, Ill. - Wichita State jumped out to a 4-0 lead and
held on to beat Illinois State 4-2 in game one of a three-game series.
Casey Gillaspie went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a home run,
while Dayne Parker went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Josh Smith earned the win.
He went six shutout innings and gave up two hits with four walks and
five strikeouts. Cale Elam went 0.2
innings to pick up his seventh save of the season.
The Shockers got on the board with a run in the first
inning. Taylor Doggett led off with a
single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Kevin Hall. With two outs, Doggett came around to score
after an Illinois State error to put WSU up 1-0.
WSU tacked on another run in the fourth. Erik Harbutz singled through the right side
with two outs, stole second and scored on a single to centerfield by Dayne
Parker to go in front 2-0.
Don Lambert led off the seventh inning with a double and
Casey Gillaspie homered to give WSU a 4-0 lead.
The Redbirds tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth as
they used four hits and an error to score two runs, but Elam induced a double
play to end the game.
The Shockers and Redbirds play game two of the series on
Sat., April 7 at p.m.
