Shockers Victorious in Home Finale

WICHITA, Kan. -- Three Wichita State pitchers combined to hold Florida Atlantic to one run as the Shockers salvaged the series finale with a 4-1 win in the final home game of the 2026 season at Eck Stadium.

The Shockers (27-25, 11-13) got a strong start from right-hander Johnny Nuanez (5-2) who kept FAU to just one unearned run on two hits over 5.0 innings while striking out five. He handed the ball off to lefty Reese Kortum, who delivered one of the best outings of his season with 3.2 scoreless innings in relief, exiting with two on and two out in the ninth. Closer Brady Pacha issued a walk to load the bases, but got Nick Romano to ground out to shortstop to end the game and record his sixth save of the season.

Wichita State built a cushion offensively with some early damage against Owls pitching. Alex Ulloa broke the scoreless deadlock in the second inning with a solid RBI single, knocking home Kaleb Duncan, who had walked, stole second and moved to third on a ground out. Jayson Jones doubled the advantage to 2-0 with a well-struck sacrifice fly, plating Zeb Henry. Both runs were charged to FAU starter Dalton Robinson (1-3), who recorded just four outs before exiting.

A Duncan double play grounder in the third inning stretched the lead to 3-0.

Florida Atlantic (27-24, 12-12) got their only run of the day in the top of the fifth via a two-out RBI double from Kyle Boylston, but the Shockers fired right back in the bottom of the inning when Jacob Gutierrez lashed a two-out RBI single of his own to produce the final margin. Gutierrez finished with a game-high three hits.

The Shockers close out the regular season with a three-game series on the road at South Florida. First pitch of Thursday's series opener is scheduled for 5:35 pm CT.
