MANHATTAN, Kan.- In windy conditions, the No. 68 Wichita
State women's tennis team defeated Kansas State, 4-3, Thursday afternoon at the
Wamego Recreation Complex.
The Shockers would go down a point early, losing two out of
three matches in the doubles competition. Lutfiana Budiharto and Carla
Venticinque would get the only win for the Shockers in doubles play, defeating
Carmen Borau Ramos and Petra Chuda, 8-5.
The Shockers put the Wildcats away in the singles
competition, winning in the three, four, five, and six positions. Lucia
Kovalova defeated Carli Wischhoff, 6-1, 3-6, 6-0, Veronika Blaskova defeated
Amina St. Hill, 7-5, 6-3, Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul defeated Marketa Trousilova,
6-4, 6-4, and Carla Venticinque took down Carmen Borau Ramos, 6-2, 6-3, to lead
the Shocker women to victory.
"The conditions were difficult today, but across the board
in singles play we did a good job to compete well from start to finish," said
head coach Colin Foster. "All four of the singles wins had close sets and we raised
our level when it mattered most."
The Shockers are back in action at home on Saturday and
Sunday. They will take on Evansville on Saturday at 1 p.m., and Southern
Illinois on Sunday at 9 a.m. Both matches will be played at the Sheldon Coleman
Tennis Complex.
