Madison, Miss. - With play suspended in the second round, the
Wichita State University men's golf team leads the BancorpSouth Intercollegiate
by five strokes. The Shockers,
ranked No. 29 in the country by GolfWeek, sport four players with scores under
par.
The remainder of the second round from the Par-72,
7,305-yard Reunion Golf and Country Club will take place beginning at 10 a.m.
Tuesday and the tournament will be shortened to 36 holes.
Sophomore Calvin Pearson sits in second place in the
individual race, one stroke off the pace.
Pearson and two players from Central Arkansas, Austen Moix and David
Morago, fired off first round 67's to claim the top spot on the leader board in
the opening round.
WSU junior Rafael Becker, winner of the last two Missouri
Valley Conference Golfer-of-the-Week awards, is in third place at
5-under-par. He shot a 4-under 68
to tie with Memphis' Jonathan Fly and UCF's Brad Schneider for fourth in the
first round.
Wichita State leads the host school, Mississippi, as well as
nationally ranked opponents (by GolfWeek) Central Florida (21), UAB (30),
Memphis (45), and Middle Tennessee State (47). Two unranked opponents are currently the top challengers to
WSU with Southeastern Louisiana in second at 11-under and Central Arkansas in
third at 10-under.
The Shockers next travel to Phoenix, Ariz. for the Wyoming
Cowboy Classic Monday, April 9 and Tuesday, April 10.
