Las Cruces, N.M. - Three Shockers shot under 70 for the
final round of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate and the Wichita State
University men's golf team pulled away for its third team title in five fall
tournaments.
Hunter Sparks placed third while Louis Cohen Boyer came in
fifth. Tyler Gann tied for 12th
while Rafael Becker (t-22nd) and Calvin Pearson (t-30th)
also had solid showings. Chandler Rusk
competed as an individual and tied for seventh.
Sparks (67), Boyer (69), and Gann (68) each turned in their
best rounds of the tournament on Tuesday as WSU took a one-stroke lead and
turned it into a nine-stroke victory over UNLV.
Wichita State previously won the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic and the
Colorado State Ram Master Collegiate.
The Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate provided senior Hunter
Sparks an opportunity to shine at the 7,074-yard, par-71 New Mexico State Golf
Course for the second year in a row. He
won the tournament in 2011 and rallied to place third this year. Sparks finished at 6-under (71-69-67=207) for
his top performance of the fall season.
Boyer was also sharp, carding par-or-better in all three
rounds. The sophomore delivered his
fourth straight top-10 finish, wrapping up at 4-under (69-71-69=209). Boyer is the only Shocker to place in the top
10 in every fall event this year.
Gann improved markedly as the tournament went on. The senior bounced back from a first round 74
to produce at 70 and 68 in the final two frames. He closed at 1-under with a 212 to tie for 12th
place, his second top-15 finish of the fall.
With the fall season completed, WSU will next compete at the
UTSA Oak Hills Invitational on Feb. 11-12, 2013.
