ZIONSVILLE, Ind. - The Wichita State University men's golf
team shot an opening round 301 to tie for 11th place Thursday at the
NCAA Central Regional. Tyler
Gann's 2-over 73 topped the Shockers and put him in a seven-way tie for 27th.
Gann, a sophomore, birdied three of his first 12 holes to
sit at 1-under par before a bogey on the fifth hole and a double-bogey on seven
caused him to settle for a 2-over 73.
Fellow sophomore Rafael Becker carded a 3-over 74 to tie for
35th overall. Hunter
Sparks, Calvin Pearson and Elliot Soyez all recorded 6-over 77's to tie for 52nd. Soyez tallied four birdies on the day
in his first competition since the Rio Pinar Invitational in mid-March.
The top five teams and the top individual from a team that
does not advance qualify for the NCAA Championship. The Central Regional continues with 18 holes Friday and the
final 18 on Saturday.
Illinois leads Alabama by one stroke in the team race while Scott
Langley of the Illini, Bud Caley and Hunter Hamrick of Alabama, Matt Thompson
and Jack Schultz of Michigan, Chris Brant of Iowa and Jack Belote of Memphis
