WICHITA, Kan.- Wichita State hit three home runs and scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to run-rule Indiana State, 10-2, in the third game of the series in Wichita, Kan. Sunday afternoon.
The Shockers scored 10 runs off of 11 hits for the game. Six different Shocks picked up at least one hit in the game. They were led by Kiersten Dixon who went 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run, two RBI, and three runs scored. Hayley Temple was 2-for-3 with a home run, four RBI, and a run scored. Rachel Milnark hit the third home run of the game as she went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.
Heather Gerritse was 2-for-3 on the day with two RBI and a run scored. Jamie Hull was 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Sloan Anderson picked up her second career win in the circle as a Shocker. She went 5.1 innings and held the Sycamores scoreless on just three hits. She recorded five strikeouts on the day and improves to 2-4 on the season.
Wichita State improves to 9-24 on the season and 2-6 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Indiana State falls to 11-15 overall and 2-6 in the Valley.
The Sycamores reached the scoreboard first scoring two runs off of three hits and one error in the top of the first inning. The Shockers answered right back scoring one run off of two hits and one error. Kiersten Dixon started things off for Wichita State by hitting a single right back up the middle. She advanced to second on a Jamie Hull fielder's choice and an error on the Sycamores pitcher. Hayley Temple then singled up the middle to bring home Dixon and make it a 2-1 game in favor of ISU.
The Shockers took their first lead of the game, 4-2, by scoring three runs off of four hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. Danika Miller started things off with an infield single. Dixon kept things going with a single to right field and Hull picked up the first RBI of the inning as she scored Miller with a double back up the middle. Dixon made it a 3-2 game in favor of WSU as she scored on a Heather Gerritse suicide squeeze. The Shocks took a 4-2 lead as Hayley Temple made it back-to-back suicide squeezes as she scored Hull with a sacrifice bunt.
Freshman Rachel Milnark led off the bottom of the sixth inning with her second career home run in a Shocker uniform. The homer over the wall in left center made it a 5-2 game in favor of WSU. Dixon made it two Shocker home runs in the inning by hitting a two-run shot over the fence in dead center. It was Dixon's fourth home run of the season and 17th of her career. Hull walked and then Gerritse hit a double to right center to make it an 8-2 game. The game was called due to the mercy rule after Temple hit a two-run walk-off home run over the fence in left field. The Shocks took down the Sycamores, 10-2.
The Shockers take a break from Missouri Valley Conference action as they return to action for a double-header against the University of Tulsa. Wichita State travels to Tulsa, Okla. on Wed., April 6 with the series beginning at 3:00 p.m.
