CARBONDALE, Ill.- The Wichita State softball team was swept by Southern Illinois, 5-0, in its first Missouri Valley Conference series of the season in Carbondale, Ill. Sunday afternoon.
SIU wrapped up the series by shutting out the Shockers in all three games. Wichita State fell to 6-21 overall and 0-3 in MVC play, as Southern Illinois improved to 16-9 overall and a perfect 3-0 in Valley play.
The Salukis' starting pitcher, Danielle Glosson, held the Shockers scoreless and only gave up two hits the entire game. She picked up nine strikeouts as she improved to 9-4 on the season.
Senior Heather Gerritse and freshman Rachel Milnark picked up the Shockers' only two hits of the game. Milnark was 1-for-1 at the plate and was hit by a pitch twice. Gerritse was 1-for-3 on the day.
Sophomore Katie Armagost got the start in the circle for Wichita State and fell to 4-9 on the season. She went 1.1 innings and gave up two runs off of three hits. Sloan Anderson came into the game out of the bullpen and picked up four strikeouts in 4.2 innings of action.
The Salukis went to work early on the Shockers taking a 2-0 lead by scoring two runs off of three hits in the bottom of the first inning. Taylor Orsburn picked up the first RBI of the game by scoring Morgan Barchan with a base hit single. Later in the inning, Orsburn scored a run of her own as Jayna Spivey picked up the second Saluki RBI of the inning.
SIU made it a 4-0 game by scoring two runs off of two hits and one error in the bottom of the fourth inning. Haley Gorman picked up two RBI in the inning with a two-out bases clearing triple to score both Barchan and Chelsea Held.
The Salukis kept their bats going in the bottom of the fifth inning by score one run off of two hits to make the score 5-0 in favor of SIU. Southern recorded ten hits through five innings of play. SIU would go on to win the game by the same score.
The Shockers return to action Wed., March 23 as they wrap up the road swing in Macomb, Ill. when they take on a double-header with Western Illinois. The two game series begins at approximately 3:00 p.m.
