WICHITA, Kan.- Wichita State dropped its second game of the
double-header against Iowa State, 10-5, in front of 449 fans at Wilkins
Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The 449 fans ranked 10th best in the
program's history at Wilkins Stadium. The Shockers were led by Rachel
Milnark who went 3-for-4 at the plate. She was 5-for-6 on the day.
Hayley Temple went 2-for-3 picking up two RBI and scoring two runs.
After
three scoreless innings from both teams, Iowa State reached the
scoreboard first as they scored four runs off of four hits in the top of
the fourth inning. Erica Miller hit a solo home run to start off the
inning. The Cyclones loaded the bases and then Heidi Kidwell hit a bases
clearing triple down the right field line to make the score 4-0 in
favor of ISU.
The Shockers answered the Cyclones runs in the
bottom of the fourth inning by scoring one run off of four hits. Hayley
Temple led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Rachel
Milnark then followed that up with a single back up the middle. An
illegal pitch from Lauren Kennwell then scored Temple and moved Milnark
to third base.
Holly Eckert was the next batter up at the plate and hit a
foul ball toward the Iowa State dugout. Milnark was ruled out at third
base due to a runner's inference. The call cost the Shockers a run as
Eckert doubled to left center the very next pitch.
The Shocks
kept their bats going in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Danika Miller
led things off with a single to right center.
Kiersten Dixon hit her
second triple of the year down the left field line and picked up an RBI
scoring Miller. Dixon then came around to score off of a Heather
Gerritse sacrifice hit to the right side of the infield. Hull moved to
third on Gerritse's sacrifice and then came around to score off of a
Temple suicide squeeze. By the end of the inning, the Shockers scored
three runs off of three hits.
The Cyclones took a 5-4 advantage
in the top of the sixth inning scoring one run off of two hits. The
Shockers had runners in scoring position in the bottom of the inning,
but the Cyclones were able to get out of the jam with no harm done.
ISU
took that momentum into the top of the seventh inning. They scored six
runs off of three hits and one error to take a 10-4 lead into the bottom
of the inning. Temple made it a 10-5 game hitting a solo home run out
to center field. The Cyclones hung on to win, 10-5.
Wichita State and Iowa State return to action tomorrow to wrap up the three game series with the first pitch set for 12:00 p.m.
Cyclones Down Shockers, 10-2
WICHITA, Kan.- Wichita State fell, 10-2, to Iowa State in the first
game of the season opening double-header at Wilkins Stadium Saturday
afternoon.
The Shockers were led by freshman
Rachel Milnark who
went 2-for-2 at the plate with one run scored.
Jamie Hull finished the
first game with one hit and two RBI.
Heather Gerritse and
Danika Miller
picked up the rest of the hits for the Shockers as they each recorded
one.
Iowa State starting pitcher, Rachel Zabriskie, improved to
7-4 on the season picking up the win in the circle. She went 4.1
innings, held the Shockers scoreless, and only gave up three hits.
Katie Armagost fell to 4-6 on the season as she picked up the loss for the Shockers in the circle.
Iowa
State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as they scored three runs off of
one hit and one error in the top of the first inning. Starting pitcher
Katie Armagost was called for five illegal pitches in the inning.
The
Cyclones made the score 7-0 in the top of the third inning scoring four
runs off of one hit. After three consecutive walks, Tori Torrescano
singled to left center to score Heidi Kidwell. Sara Davison came home to
score as Amandine Habben was hit by a pitch, and then another came
across the plate as Anna Cole was walked with the bases loaded.
Torrescano scored the fourth run of the inning off of a fielder's choice
in the infield.
ISU scored three runs off of five hits to take a
10-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. The Shockers reached the
scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring two runs off of two
hits and one error. Milnark picked up her second hit of the game by
doubling up the middle. She moved over to third base when
Kiersten Dixon
reached by an error.
Jamie Hull then brought home both Milnark and
Dixon with a double down the left field line. The game was called at the
end of the inning due to the mercy rule.
