CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Wichita State advanced to the semifinals
of the 2011 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament with a 3-0
quarterfinal win against Indiana State Thursday at the McLeod Center.
The No. 3-seed Shockers won by scores of 25-16, 25-15 and
25-16 led by Camri Zwiesler's match-high 11 kills and 18 digs, as well as Mary
Elizabeth Hooper's match-high 32 assists.
Zwiesler's double-double marked her conference-leading 15th
of the season as the Shockers improved to 20-9 on the season.
No. 6-seed Indiana State closed the season with an overall
record of 14-17 after meeting the Shockers for the first time in postseason
play. Monique Morris led Indiana State with eight kills and 17 digs. Shelbi
Fouty had 26 assists.
Thursday's win gave the Shockers a six-match winning streak
and marked the 20th time in a row the Shockers have defeated the
Sycamores dating to 2002.
A block by Zwiesler gave the Shockers
an 8-5 lead early in the first set. A kill by Indiana State's Murphy tied the
set, 9-9, and a kill from the Sycamores' Doran later tied the score, 12-12. The
Shockers responded with a four-point run to take a 16-12 lead, capped with a
block by Sanders and Field. The Shockers continued the run, outscoring the
Sycamores 13-4 down the stretch. An Andrade kill gave the Shockers a 25-16 in
the opening set.
The Shockers jumped out to a 10-4 lead
in the second set, grabbing the six-point lead on a block by Andrade and
Sanders. A four-point run by the Sycamores cut the Shockers' lead to two points
soon after. An Andrade service ace later pushed Wichita State ahead, 18-9,
finishing a four-point run. A kill by Zwiesler sealed the Shockers' 25-15 win.
In the third set, a four-point run by
the Shockers gave them a 7-2 edge. A Zwiesler service ace gave Wichita State an
11-5 advantage. A block by Sanders and Field pushed the Shockers ahead by
eight, 14-6. A Sanders' kill gave Wichita State a nine-point lead. Two attack
errors by Indiana State closed the set, giving the Shockers a 25-16 win.
The Shockers advance to play No. 2-seed Missouri State at 5
p.m. Friday at the McLeod Center.
