Shockers Sweep Fall Doubleheader

WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State softball team picked up two wins against Newman University and Seminole State College in a fall softball doubleheader at Wilkins Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Shockers won game one, 7-2, against Newman and went on to win game two, 9-7, against Seminole State College.

Sammie Shook led the Shockers on the day going 3-for-6 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Sydney Stuever was 4-for-6 on the day with one RBI and two runs scored. Rachel Milnark was consistent at the lead-off position going 4-for-7 on the day with an RBI and a run scored.

Hayley Temple and Erin Carney combined for six hits, three RBI, and five runs scored.

Katie Armagost and Sloan Anderson each picked up a win in the circle for the Shockers.

The Shockers raced out to an early 2-0 lead scoring two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning of the first game. Milnark led off the inning for WSU with a double falling in the gap between third and left-field. Layne Greenlee moved Milnark to third base with a sacrifice bunt before Temple brought her home with a single to the left side. Carney picked up the second RBI of the inning scoring Temple with a double to right right center field.

Newman evened the score at 2-2 in the top of the second inning when Sarah Balderas hit a two-run home run out to left-field.

The Shockers made it back-to-back innings of scoring runs taking a 4-2 lead by scoring two runs on three hits in the bottom of the second inning. Greenlee hit a two-run double to lead the Shockers in the inning.

WSU took a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Carney hit a double out to right center and eventually stole home.

The Shocks scored two runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to claim a 7-2 lead over the Jets. Stuever picked up an RBI in the inning scoring Kaitlyn Carey with a double over the left fielder's head. Milnark then scored Stuever with a base-hit single.

Wichita State went on to win the first game of the doubleheader, 7-2, over the Newman Jets. Milnark led the Shockers going 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and run scored. Stuever went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Greenlee went 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBI.

Anderson picked up the win in the circle going 5.0 innings and giving up just two runs on five hits. Armagost picked up the save.

Wichita State fell behind early in the second game of the doubleheader against Seminole State College. The Trojans took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. WSU got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Shook scored Carney with a single back up the middle.

Seminole State jumped ahead to a 6-1 lead in the second inning scoring four runs on four hits in the inning.

The Shocks went on to score four runs in the third inning and four again the fifth inning to claim a 9-6 lead over the Trojans. The Shockers scored eight runs on nine hits during that time and went on to win the second game, 9-7.

Twelve different Shockers picked up a hit and six scored at least one run. Shook, Eckert, and Bond each picked up two RBI. They were led by Shook, who went a pefect 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Temple was 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.

Armagost picked up the win in the circle going 4.0 innings and giving up just one run on four hits.

The Shockers return to fall action on Sat., Oct. 8 when they host Cowley County, Kansas Wesleyan, and Western Nebraska with action starting at 11:00 a.m.
