Shocks Stop Salukis, 5-2

WICHITA, Kan.- Heather Gerritse had two RBI on the day to help Wichita State (16-27, 6-12) take the final game of a three game series against visiting Southern Illinois (30-17, 15-4), 5-2, Sunday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium.

WSU set the tone early, putting pressure on the Saluki defense and turning mistakes into runs. Lindsie Mitts led off the inning with a single down the right field line that glanced off the glove of a diving Corinna Gonzalez.

Kersti Rowan came to the plate with the intent to sacrifice Mitts to second, but reached on a bunt single when no one covered first for SIU. Kiersten Dixon popped up a bunt that fell out of Natalee Weissinger's glove as she tried to make a diving play.

With the bases loaded and just one out, WSU could only manage a single run on a sacrifice fly to left field on a well hit ball by Kara L'Huillier. Sustained winds of 25 mph with gusts over 30 mph turned what might have been a grand slam into a sacrifice fly.

WSU added an unearned run in the second after Katie Wilson misplayed a fly ball off the bat of Sammie Shook. Shook came around to score on Mitts' single up the middle to make it 2-0 WSU.

With the lead, WSU starter Kasha Kolb cruised. No Saluki reached third base in the first five innings and by that time the Shockers had built a 4-0 lead.

Heather Gerritse provided what proved to be a big two-out two RBI single in the fourth to extend the WSU lead. After SIU pitcher Danielle Glosson retired the first two batters of the inning, Rowan drew a walk and Dixon singled.

The speedy Rowan advanced to third on Dixon's hit and a stolen base from the WSU right fielder put runners on second and third for Gerritse, who lined a Glosson offering over the glove of shortstop Haley Gorman to plate the runners.

Jamie Hull capped off the scoring for the Shockers with her fifth home run of the season. With the wind blowing in from left, Hull went to the opposite field to tie Gerritse for the team lead in homers.

SIU ended the shutout with an unearned run in the sixth and a solo homer in the seventh.

Kolb put an exclamation mark on the win with back-to-back strikeouts to end the game. She went the distance for her ninth complete game and 10th win on the season. Kolb allowed just one earned run and one walk while striking out four.

WSU will wrap up its non-conference schedule with a doubleheader at Kansas on Wed., April 28, with the first pitch of game one scheduled for 5 p.m.
