ST. CHARLES, Mo. - Chynna Turner hit a 3-pointer from the corner with just under a minute left in regulation to break a 73-73 tie and Wichita State went on defeat Missouri State, 80-75, Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
The win gave WSU three wins over the Bears this season, marking the first time a Shocker squad had defeated a team three times in one season.
WSU was led by Jessica Diamond's 21 points. Sheena Johnson added 18 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. The Bears were led by Jaleshia Roberson's 20 points.
The Shockers struck early, going inside to Michelle Price and Johnson for a quick 4-0 lead. After the Bears took their first lead of the game on a Roberson 3-pointer, WSU rattled off a 7-0 to take a 13-7 lead.
Roberson led the comeback effort for MSU, scoring nine points on three 3-pointers as part of a 11-0 run. Johnson put an end to the run with a 17-foot jumper and WSU pulled closer with a perfect pass from Turner to Haleigh Lankster resulted in a fast break basket.
WSU erased the deficit thanks, in part, to all-freshman team selection Jessica Diamond. She scored nine of her 11 first half points in a five minute stretch, including a 3-pointer to give WSU a 28-27 lead with 6:39 to play in the half.
After the teams traded baskets the Bears switched to a zone defense that frustrated the Shocker offense. WSU would not score for the last 3:40 of the half while MSU went on a 10-0 run, owning a 41-34 lead at the half.
Diamond led the Shockers in the first half with 11 points while Roberson paced MSU with 16 points. WSU out-shot the Bears in the opening frame, 51.6-percent to 48.4-percent, but was outscored 7-0 at the free throw line.
Fouls became an issue early in the second half for MSU, as the Bears picked up seven fouls in the first four minutes. But the Shockers failed to capitalize early, missing four of their first six freebies.
Instead, the Shockers used their transition game to cut into the Bears' lead. Buckets by Johnson and Diamond along with free throws by Jazimen Gordon pulled WSU to within two, 52-50, with 13 minutes to play.
The games slowed midway through the half as both teams reached the double-bonus with nine minutes to play.
After trading baskets for most of the half the Shockers slowly clawed their way back with solid free throw shooting and defense. A Lankster 3-pointer pulled the Shockers within one, and Price tied it, 68-68, with a free throw.
With just under a minute to play and the score tied at 73, Turner took a pass in the corner and knocked down her first 3-pointer of the night for a 76-73 lead. Johnson salted the game away at the free throw line hitting four from the charity stripe in the final 15 seconds.
MSU's Casey Garrison had a look at the buzzer but it fell short, giving the Shockers an 80-75 win.
With the win, WSU advances to the semifinals and will take on Creighton at 7:30 p.m. Fans can listen to the game online at ShockerRadio.com, or watch the action live from The Family Arena on Fox Sports Midwest.
