Box Score LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Emily Stockman's 18 kills powered No. 17 Wichita State to a 3-1 win over Louisville. The Shockers (2-1) won by scores of 25-20, 25-16, 20-25 and 25-14.
Stockman also added seven digs, while hitting .295 in the match. Freshman Emily Adney added eight kills, while hitting .412. Mary Elizabeth Hooper had a match-high 35 assists along with five kills, two service aces, 11 digs and three blocks.
Back-to-back kills by Emily Stockman put the Shocks up 7-5 in the first set, but the Cardinals came back to tie it at eight after a ballhandling error. The teams traded points until the Shocks went up 16-13 behind the serving of Melissa Granville. Another Stockman kill put the Shocks up 18-14, but back-to-back kills brought UL back to within 19-16. A kill by Mary Elizabeth Hooper gave WSU a 23-20 advantage and the Shocks won the set 25-20 on a kill by Stockman.
Stockman led the Shockers in the first set with eight kills, while as a team WSU hit .265.
A couple of kills by Sarah McGee put the Shocks up 3-1 in the second set, but the Cardinals used a block and a kill to tie it at three. Behind the serving of Katie Niggemeyer, the Shockers took a 10-5 advantage and increased it to 16-9 on a kill by Stephanie Tokarz. WSU won the set 25-16 on a kill by Stockman.
The Cardinals took an early 4-2 lead in the third set, but the Shockers came back to take a 6-5 lead after a kill by Niggemeyer. A UL block put the Cardinals back up 9-6 and they increased the lead to 12-7 after back-to-back kills. UL never looked back in the 25-20 win.
The teams traded points early in the fourth set until an ace by Sarah Waldorf put the Shocks up 8-5. A UL hitting error increased the lead to 12-7 and a Stockman kill put the Shockers in control at 17-8. WSU cruised to the 25-14.
The Shockers are next in action on Fri., Sept. 4 when they take on North Carolina at 7 p.m. inside Charles Koch Arena.
