LOUISVILLE, Ky. – No. 17 Wichita State (1-1) suffered its
first loss of the season in three sets to Pittsburgh. The Panthers (2-0) won by scores of 25-22,
25-23 and 25-21.
Emily Stockman led the Shockers with 10 kills and five
digs, while Emily Adney added eight kills.
Mary Elizabeth Hooper had a team-high 26 assists, while Sarah McGee had
eight blocks and Melissa Granville had nine digs.
The Panthers jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the first set,
but the Shockers came back to tie it at eight after a kill by Emily Adney. The teams traded points until back-to-back
hitting errors by the Shockers gave Pitt a 15-12 lead. WSU tied it at 17 after a Pitt hitting error,
but back-to-back kills by the Panthers put them up 20-18. A block by Sarah McGee tied the score at 20,
but WSU could not take the lead late and Pitt held on to win the first set
25-22.
In the second set, the Panthers raced out to a 3-0 lead,
but a block by Emily Stockman and McGee tied the score at three. The teams went back-and-forth until a
Stockman kill put the Shocks up 16-13. Pitt pulled to within 20-19 after
back-to-back Shocker hitting errors and took the lead 21-20 after a kill. Pitt
won the set 25-23 on a WSU service error.
Pitt took an early 5-0 lead in the third set and increased
its lead to 14-7 before the Shockers pulled to within 14-12 behind the serving
of Sarah Waldorf. The Panthers again
took control of the set going up 21-15 and went on to win 25-21.
The Shockers finish the tournament with a match against
host Louisville at noon Central time on Sun., Aug. 30.
