STANFORD, Calif. - The Wichita State women's tennis team's upset bit of No. 13 Stanford fell short as the Shockers dropped a 4-0 decision to the Cardinal in the opening round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship, which began Saturday at the Taube Family Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif.
The Cardinal made the first move, winning the doubles point, and never looked back. WSU's No. 1 doubles team of Anna Egorova and Lutfiana Budiharto dropped an 8-2 decision to Hillary Barte and Lindsay Burdette, while the Shockers No. 2 duo fell to Cardinal foes Jessica Ngyuen and Carolyn McVeigh.
In singles play Egorova dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Barte in the No. 1 match, while Nguyen downed Torrie Browning in the No. 3 match, 6-1, 6-1. The Cardinal clenched the right to advance in the tournament when McVeigh defeated Lenore Lazaroiu in the No. 5 match, 6-4, 6-1, to give Stanford the 4-0 win.
The Shockers finish their season with a 21-6 overall record, while the Cardinal improves to 18-4 with the win, and will face No. 25 LSU in the second round match Sunday.
