Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Missouri State (23-14, 9-2 MVC) got outstanding pitching and timely hitting to secure a series sweep of Wichita State (20-18, 5-5) with a 2-0 win Sunday afternoon at Hammons Field.
The game, scheduled to be played at 1 p.m., did not get started until after 5 p.m., following a four-plus hour rain delay.
MSU's win also marked the first time Wichita State was swept in a MVC series since 2001 when Missouri State took all three games from the Shockers in Springfield.
Neither offense could get on track until the fourth when the Bears used a walk and hits by Chris Playter and Travis McCormack to score a pair of runs to post the first runs of the game.
It was all the offense MSU starter Aaron Meade (6-2) needed, as he stymied the Shocker offense for the first seven innings until
Mitch Caster slapped a single to right with one out in the eighth for WSU's first hit.
Meade worked eight innings, giving up just one hit while walking five and striking out six in the win. Jon Barnes came on to close out the game in the ninth for the save, keeping the Shockers off the scoreboard.
Jordan Cooper (5-4) took the hard-luck loss, giving up two runs on eight hits in seven innings of work. Cooper struck out seven and walked two in the losing effort.
Ryan Jones helped keep the Bears from extending the lead in the eighth after Tyler Ryun singled after a pair of walks. Jones made a pinpoint throw on wet turf to
Cody Lassley at the plate to get the runner and give the Shockers a chance in the ninth.
WSU's offense never got started however, as the Shockers dropped their sixth-straight game.
Wichita State is next in action when it plays host to Oklahoma State at 7 p.m., Tuesday at Eck Stadium on Pack the Park Night. All tickets are just $5 if bought before tomorrow.
