CARBONDALE, Ill. - The No. 72 Wichita State women's tennis team improved to 16-5 overall, and 6-0 in Valley play with a 6-1 win over Southern Illinois in an Easter morning match at the University Courts in Carbondale, Ill.
Anna Egorova suffered the Shockers' only singles loss when she dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Fadzai Mawisire in the No. 1 match. Egorova was also involved in the only WSU doubles loss when she and doubles partner Stephanie Dalmacio dropped an 8-4 decision to Mawisire and Ame Blaketer in the No. 1 doubles match.
WSU swept the remaining matches for the 6-1 dual win. Lutfiana Budiharto earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Vishaka Sheoran in the No. 2 singles match while Torrie Browning notched a win in the No. 3 match with a 6-4, 2-6, 10-3 win over Blaketer and Dalmacio won the No. 4 match with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Michaela Cruise. Lenore Lazaroiu and Florentina Hanisch rounded out the Shocker singles scorecard. Lazaroiu downed Jessica Flannery in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 5 match, while Florentina Hanisch cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Martina Ce in the No. 6 match.
The Shockers' doubles competition was highlighted by the No. 3 match, where Hanisch teamed with Laryssa Ferreira to defeat the 68th-ranked Salukis doubles tandem of Ce and Sheoran, 8-3. Budiharto and Lazaroiu secured the doubles point with an 8-6 win over SIU's Cruise and Flannery.
Wichita State returns to action Saturday, April 18, when they travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa for a date with the Northern Iowa Panthers.
