No. 59 Nevada Tops No. 66 Shocks, 4-1

WICHITA - In a battle between two nationally-ranked teams, the 66th-ranked Wichita State women's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to 59th-ranked Nevada Saturday afternoon at Genesis Health Club.

The higher-ranked Wolf Pack picked up early momentum in doubles competition, taking two of three doubles matches from the Shockers and taking the early advantage in the dual. Nevada's Caroline Bailly and Maria Mizyuk downed WSU's Anna Egorova and Stephanie Dalmacio, 8-6, in the No. 1 match, while UNR's Florence De Vrye and Lais Ogata followed suit in the No. 2 match with an 8-6 win over Lenore Lazaroiu and Lutfiana Budiharto.

Florentina Hanisch and Torrie Browning picked up WSU's only doubles win of the match, defeating Nevada's Aodhnait Lombard and Caroline Stevens, 8-3, in the No. 3 match.

The Wolf Pack carried their doubles momentum into singles play as well. Bailly wasted no time dispatching of Egorova, winning the No. 1 match by a 6-1, 6-1 count. Wichita State countered in the No. 2 match when Budiharto downed De Vrye in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, but it was all Wolf Pack from that point on.

Nevada's Mizyuk ousted Dalmacio with a 6-2, 6-4 decision in the No. 3 match, and Stevens secured the Wolf Pack win with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Hanisch in the No. 5 match.

Lazaroiu was within two points of picking up a second point for the Shockers. When the match was called, she led Lombard 6-0, 5-1 in the No. 6 match, and had a 30-love lead in the seventh-game when her match was officially declared unfinished. The No. 4 match was also unfinished with Browning leading Ogata, 6-4, 2-1.

The Shockers will conclude the Via Christi Collegiate Classic Sunday with a 9 a.m. match against 24th-ranked SMU. The match will be played at Genesis Health Club's Rock Road location, and former women's head coach Les Stafford will be honored in a special ceremony between singles and doubles play.
