WICHITA, Kan.--Playing without a point guard for the game's final two minutes, Wichita State snapped a 20-game losing streak to Northern Iowa on Sunday, 64-53.
Senior Daria Frazier's first double-double of the season helped the Shockers obliterate an 13-point first half deficit to take a 28-26 lead into halftime, and hang on to it to give the Shockers their first victory over the Panthers since January of 2000.
Frazier led all scorers with 19 points and brought down 11 boards. The other half of the senior duo, Marcy Sudbeck, notched her seventh double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Despite fouling out with two minutes remaining, junior point guard Marisah Henderson trailed Frazier as the second-leading scorer with 15 points.
Junior guard Nicole Clausen paced the Panthers' offense with 13 points. Clausen was closely trailed by freshman K.K. Armstrong, who had 12 points coming from a 10-of-14 performance from the free-throw line.
Their offensive struggles from the first half behind them, the Shockers scored back-to-back buckets within the first minute of the second half to extend their lead, 32-26. Clausen added to her team-leading eight first-half points when she executed a three-point play, bringing the score to, 34-31.
Wichita State answered with a quick 7-0 run, highlighted by five-straight points from Henderson, to give the Shockers their first double-digit lead, 41-31.
On fire, the Shocks shot a blazing 86 percent from the floor in the first five minutes of the second half. Not quite at the midpoint, they had cooled only slightly as their shooting percentage sat at an astounding 67 percent. They finished a 41 percent clip for the game.
Frazier and Sudbeck hit back-to-back buckets to give their squad its largest lead of the afternoon, 49-37. The Panthers rallied with a 6-0 run before Henderson dropped in a jumper and restored the Shockers' breathing room, 51-43.
That room quickly shrunk after sophomore guard Jacie Hoyt was called for her fifth foul with three minutes remaining. Almost exactly one minute later, Henderson committed her fifth. The team's point guards left the game with 22 combined points, and allowed freshman K.K. Armstrong to sink four-straight free throws.
A three by freshman guard Rachel Madrigal with less than 1:30 on the clock provided additional drama, closing the Panthers' deficit, 58-51. Madrigal's trey was the only field goal the Panthers' made in the final 12 minutes of the game, and would prove harmless.
En route to building a lead that the Shockers would eradicate, junior Kim Wypiszynski kicked off the Panthers' afternoon with a three-point play. The forward followed that up with a lay up before Clausen drained a three to give Northern Iowa an early advantage, 8-2.
UNI would stretch that lead to 12-2, before Frazier and Sudbeck shrunk the deficit, 12-6, with a jumper and a pair of free throws, respectively. But a fairly rare three-point attempt for sophomore forward Lizzie Boeck landed and extended the lead, 17-6. The Panthers shot at a 50 percent clip through the game's first eight minutes. By the end of the half, however, the Panthers would shoot just 31 percent.
In the same time frame, the Shockers shot just 25 percent from the floor. Their luck dipped again when Frazier picked up her second foul not quite midway through the first half, putting the Shockers' high scorer on the bench for the next several minutes. Despite her early foul trouble, the senior finished the half with 10 points.
Nearly halfway through the opening 20 minutes, Wichita State's defense kicked up the intensity. The Shockers cooled UNI's shooting percentage to 33 percent, while pulling down a pair of blocks and forcing a Panther shot-clock violation. Sophomore Jacie Hoyt used the forced turnover to knock down a three on the Shockers' end. Once again, WSU inched closer, 20-12.
A crisp 90 percent free throw accuracy coupled with Frazier's steal for a lay up pulled the Shockers closer than they had been for the previous 15 minutes, 23-18. Three-point plays from Frazier and junior Ashley Gladden tied the game, 24-24, with less than three minutes before the break. Gladden connected again to give her team its first advantage of the afternoon, 26-24. The junior had a career-best day with eight points and five rebounds.
The Shockers are tested again on Thursday when they travel to Des Moines, Iowa to take on the Drake Bulldogs at 7:05 p.m.
