DES MOINES, Iowa -- Freshman David Cavalcanti and sophomore Scott McCormick earned the title of Missouri Valley Conference Champion, winning their respective flights at the 2009 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Men's Individual Championship, which concluded Sunday at the Drake Tennis Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Four Shocker singles and one WSU doubles team were vying for championships in Sunday's final round, but Cavalcanti and McCormick were the only victors. Cavalcanti's championship match may have been the most exciting match of the day. In see-saw fashion, Cavalcanti picked up a trhilling 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (9-7) win over Drake's Ivan Mendoza in the Flight 6 Championship. McCormick's match wasn't quite as dramatic, as the Shocker sophomore cruised to a 6-4, 6-0 win over Drake's Konrad Kamazelich to claim the Flight 7 Championship.
Sophomore Adrian Chermaci and Junior Jonathan Obrist were also involved with championship matches, but each came up short in their bids. Chermaci dropped a 6-4, 6-0 decision to Drake's Mauricio Ballivian in the Flight 2 Championship match, while Obrist fell in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, to Guliherme Marsiglia in the Flight 4 Championship.
Obrist was in action in doubles play as well on Sunday, teaming with sophomore Matt Teivans and vying for the Flight 3 Doubles title, but coming up short in an 8-3 decision at the hands of Drake's Ballivian and Mendoza.
Not to be forgotten, Vladamir Marinescu was also in action Sunday, sweeping Bradley's Milos Romic, 6-0, 6-0, to claim third place in Flight 1 singles play.
The Shockers open their spring dual season Feb. 7 when they travel to Tulsa, Okla., to battle the University of Tulsa's Golden Hurricane. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
