WICHITA, Kan.--Head Coach Gregg Marshall answered questions from Wichita's local media regarding Wednesday's game at Missouri State.
Marshall on changing the starting lineup: “There's good news and bad news. The good news is that Mantas (Griskenas), Graham Hatch and J.T. Durley played well. The flip side of that is, when they're not in and their replacement is in there is a noticeable difference in skill, talent and size. We've got some guys that are basically interchangeable. Some of them bring different things to the table. We've been doing that with (Garrett) Stutz and J.T. (Durley) all year. But I thought with the way Ramon (Clemente) had been playing that Mantas deserved a shot. The same for Graham Hatch with A.J. (Hawkins).”
Marshall on feeling like his team is too selfless: “I don't have that feeling at all. In fact, I've got a couple of guys like Toure' (Murry) who want to shoot it too quickly at times, especially when the game is on the line. That's what is going to make him great in time, but not now when that three that he's taking against Drake with a minute and a half to play and the game is tied is a forced three. He's got to realize that.”
Marshall on Clevin Hannah's success against Drake: “We want him to shoot when he's open. He's a very good shooter. That's one of the things that he does best is shoot the open three. He's not great at creating, he's not the most physical guy, he's not the best defender in the world, but he can shoot the basketball and has a pretty good understanding of our system.”
Marshall on one game changing the team's momentum: “Obviously a win would really help us at this time, and the same for them I'm sure. I don't think that one game is going to make or break our season. I think it's a whole process of rebuilding and retooling and getting players in here that can ultimately win in the MVC the way we want to win is what I'm most concerned with.”
Marshall on Missouri State: “Cuonzo (Martin) is going to be a very good coach there, and I like him a lot. We talked a great deal this summer and fall because we saw each other out there on the recruiting trail. He was beating the bushes just as I am. It's a very interesting situation that he's taken over. It's very similar to the one I took over last year. Some of his best players are seniors. I told him that he's doing something very similar to what I did. I took over a team last year with three scholarship seniors who were definitely my best players. When they left, that's when the retooling started. He's going to have to do the same thing.”
Marshall on what he's looking to accomplish this game aside from the victory: “Continued growth, and playing with more tenacity and toughness, energy and passion the way we did at Drake. I want to continue to shoot the ball well like we did at Drake. Eliminate some of the little mental mistakes, missed dunks and missed lay ups. We've got to make those shots.”
