Box Score WICHITA, Kan. ? Wichita State took the Best Western Shocker Volleyball Classic title with a thrilling 3-2 (25-16, 25-13, 17-25, 24-26, 18-16) win over Ohio St., Saturday night inside Charles Koch Arena.
The Shockers raced out to a 6-1 lead in the first set highlighted by two kills and a block assist by
Lindsey Eckenrode. A Shocker hitting error pulled the Buckeyes to within 13-10, but back-to-back kills by
Emily Stockman put the Shocks back up 18-13. WSU increased the lead to 22-14 after three-straight service aces by
Melissa Granville and won the set 25-16 after an Eckenrode kill. Eckenrode finished the set with six kills on eight swings, while Stockman and
Angela Jakubov each added four kills.
The teams traded points until back-to-back Buckeye miscues gave the Shockers an 8-3 lead early in the second set. Two more Granville aces increased the lead to 14-5 and the Shockers never looked back in the 25-13 win.
Back-to-back blocks got the Shockers started in the third set, but the Buckeyes rallied to take a 6-4 lead. A kill by Chelsea Noble increased the OSU lead to 10-6 and the teams traded points until back-to-back Stockman kills pulled the Shocks to within 18-16. OSU finished the set on a 7-1 run to win 25-17.
Set four went back-and-forth until a Buckeye hitting error gave the Shocks a 9-6 lead. A Jakubov kill increased the lead to 15-10, but OSU tied it at 16 with two blocks and an ace. A Granville ace put the Shocks up 20-17, but the Buckeyes rallied to tie it at 21. The teams traded points until the Buckeyes pulled out a 26-24 victory.
The fifth set was yet another back-and-forth battle that saw six ties and three lead changes. The Shockers jumped out to a 6-3 lead on the heels of back-to-back blocks. After falling behind 14-11, OSU fought-off match point three times and took a 15-14 lead and control of the set. WSU then fought-off match point twice and took a 17-16 lead after an attack error by Allie Schwarzwaller.
Katie Niggemeyer ended the Buckeyes' hopes for a comeback with a kill for a 18-16 win.
Stockman led the Shockers with 18 kills on the night and was named the tournament's most valuable player.
Kelly Broussard and
Mary Elizabeth Hooper were also named to the all-tournament team for their efforts.
The Shockers are next in action Sept. 12-13 in Pullman, Wash.
