Box Score WICHITA, Kan.- Wichita State (40-15, 18-5 MVC) took a 9-3 win over Bradley (26-25, 10-13 MVC), fueled by Dusty Coleman who hit for the cycle.
Doug Mirabelli was the last Shocker to achieve the feat in 1992.
Coleman ended a perfect 4-for-4 with five RBI and one run scored.
Coleman homered to start off the night in the bottom of the first. Clint McKeever was on board with a single for the two-run shot.
Coleman collected his single in the fourth, but was caught stealing to end the inning.
Starter Aaron Shafer cruised through most innings, facing the minimum in five of the nine. The junior was roughed up for two runs in the fifth, after back-to-back singles by Tommy Fitzgerald and Matt Fritz. Rob Elliott doubled in both runners with a hit to deep right field, knotting it at two.
The Shockers didn't score again until the sixth, but plated three in the bottom half of that frame. Andy Dirks reached on a walk and Ryan Jones sent him home with a double in the right-center gap, advancing to third on the throw. The Braves intentionally walked Conor Gillaspie and also gave an unintentional free pass to Clint McKeever, loading the bases. Coleman drove one to left field for a two RBI double that put WSU ahead, 5-2.
Bradley managed one in the top of the eighth, but Wichita State answered right back with four runs in the bottom half. McKeever started things with a stand up double and Coleman followed with his triple past a diving right fielder. Coleman was erased on a fielder's choice, as Josh Workman reached on the soft grounder to third. Tyler Hill was intentionally walked and Kevin Hall made the Braves pay with a double over the left fielder's head to cross Workman and Hill. Dirks traded places with the freshman on a double to deep right-center, giving the Shockers the 9-3 lead.
Nick Mitidiero led off the ninth with a single, but was quickly down on a line drive double play. Fitzgerald grounded out to seal the 9-3 win.
Shafer (9-3) threw the complete game and gave up three earned runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out eight. BU Starter Rob Scahill fell to 4-5, giving up five earned runs on five hits and four walks in 5.1 innings. Kori Jensen was tagged with four earned runs, six hits and one walk in 2.2 innings.
Wichita State remains in a tie with Missouri State for the regular-season conference title. The Shockers wrap up the series with Bradley Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Bears face off against the Northern Iowa Panthers, also at 2 p.m., Saturday.
Shocker seniors will be honored and celebrated approximately 10 minutes before the start of Saturday's game.
