Box Score WICHITA, Kan.- Wichita State (28-6) topped Tabor (17-28), 10-1, Thursday night at Eck Stadium.
WSU had plenty of opportunities, as the Shockers had 13 hits and walked 12 times. Andy Dirks and Cody Lassley both went 2-for-3 with a run and a combined three RBI.
The mound was a joint effort as starter Clint Maune threw two innings, scattering five hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Justin Kemp allowed one earned run over the next three innings, also with four strikeouts. Matt Smith, Clinton McKeever, Grant Muncrief and Dusty Coleman each threw an inning to round out the game. The last four had a combined seven strikeouts with McKeever striking out two of the three batters he faced.
Bret Bascue doubled down the left field line in the second to plate McKeever, on board with a single and moved to second on a passed ball.
A two-out throwing error by Tabor sparked the Shocker offense in the bottom of the fourth as Lassley reached safely on the error. Dirks doubled to bring the run home and continued to third on a stolen base. Kenny Williams, Jr., drove in Dirks with a single to right-center field. Ryan Jones worked a full count for a walk and Williams scrambled to third on a wild pitch. Coleman would single up the middle to score the run before the inning was over, leaving Wichita State with a 4-0 lead.
The Blue Jay's only run came in the top of the fifth after back-to-back walks and a wild pitch left a runner hovering at third. With no outs in the inning, a double play was enough of a distraction to bring the run home.
The Shockers got that run back in the bottom half as Muncrief hit a two-out single, followed by a first-pitch, Lassley double. Dirks was intentionally walked to load the bases, but that was costly as the pitcher never found the strike zone against Williams either, walking in a run on four-straight balls.
The sixth was another three-run inning for the Shockers with only two hits as the Tabor pitching staff continued to struggle. Coleman led off the inning with a double and then three consecutive walks pushed across another run. A double play was good news for the Blue Jays, but Lassley delivered a triple to bring home the remaining two base runners, and extend the WSU lead to 8-1.
Wichita State capped the night with a run in each the seventh and eighth. Roberto Rios picked up his first RBI of the season with a fielder's choice to third base. Logan Hoch was on board with a double, had moved to third on when Coleman put the ball in play, and scored on the grounder by Rios.
Ryan Engrav doubled to left-center, advanced to third and scored on two plays that were fielder's choices.
Wichita State begins a conference series with Southern Illinois Friday night at 7 p.m., at Eck Stadium.
