Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State won game one of a doubleheader against North Dakota State, 6-1, before taking game two 8-1.

Game One

A double play made for two quick outs and had wiped the bases clean, but the Shockers still managed to score a run in the first inning. Conor Gillaspie dropped a single just in front of the center fielder and proceeded to second on a stolen base and to third on a wild pitch. Tyler Weber singled to shallow left field, driving in the run.

The Bison had a chance in the second as three consecutive walks by WSU starter Aaron Shafer loaded the bases with only one out. The Shocker defense helped out, turning a double play to end the inning without any damage.

North Dakota State tied it at one in the top of the third after Sebastian Miles stuck a lead off double down the left field line. The runner advanced on a single by Ryan Langlais and Mike Germain picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice hit to the shortstop.

The Shockers got that run back in the bottom half of the frame on a sacrifice fly from Dusty Coleman. Andy Dirks singled to start the inning and Conor Gillaspie hit a ground rule double that moved the runner to third.

Wichita State opened up the game in the fifth, adding four runs to take a 6-1 lead that would hold for the remainder of the game. Dirks drew a lead off walk and moved to second as NDSU pitcher tried to pick him off first, but threw wildly for an error. Gillaspie ripped a single up the middle, bringing a run home. Coleman hit a fielder's choice, but all runners reached safely on a misplayed ground ball. An intentional walk to Weber loaded the bases, but the move proved costly as Josh Workman delivered a two-run single to the right-center gap. Clinton McKeever capped the inning with a sacrifice fly that plated Weber.

Shafer (4-1) went 5.1 innings and gave up one earned run on six hits and five walks while striking out six. Logan Hoch took over in the sixth and finished the last 1.2 innings. The junior allowed no hits, no runs and no walks, and struck out three of the five batters faced.

Laber shouldered the complete game and the loss, falling to 0-3. Laber gave up six runs, four earned, on eight hits and four walks, while only striking out two Shockers.

Game Two

Anthony Capra was sharp on the mound, striking out 11 and walking two in the complete seven-inning game. The junior lefty scattered four hits and gave up one earned run.

Tyler Weber was 3-for-3 with two RBI in game two. Ryan Jones had two hits in three at bats with two runs and three RBI.

The Shockers again put up runs right away in the first inning. Ryan Jones had a one-out single and came home easily on a Conor Gillaspie triple, fired into the left field corner. A hit by Tyler Weber to shallow right-center plated run two.

A solo shot by Billy Gazich in the top of the second would be the junior's second home run of the year and the only run North Dakota State would score.

Wichita State again answered immediately with its own run in the bottom half. Mitch Caster drew a walk to start the inning and then moved base-to-base to score on a single by Kenny Williams, Jr., a sacrifice bunt by Andy Dirks and a sacrifice fly by Gillaspie. A hard line drive to second base was the final out, but WSU had extended its lead to 3-1.

The Shockers began to pile runs on, adding five more in the bottom of the fourth. Caster singled up the middle and beat out a run down, sliding into second base with a stolen base. Williams fired one down the left field line, switching places with the runner with a double. Dirks was hit by a pitch and Jones shot a ball deep to right field for the team's second triple of the game. Jones picked up two RBI with the hit, crossing Williams and Dirks. Gillaspie hit a tough grounder to first, and although Mike Germain came up with the play, Jones took off and scored from third. Back-to-back singles from Dusty Coleman and Weber plated run five, as Coleman had moved into scoring position on a wild pitch.

Wichita State will wrap up the series with the Bison Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
