AUSTIN, Texas- The Wichita State (9-7) softball team began play on the second day of the Texas Classic by dropping a heartbreaker to Utah (10-3), 3-2.
The Utes hit the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third. Kelly Matthews singled, stole second and scored on a bloop-double down the left field line by Diana Phillips.
WSU took the lead in the fifth after some confusion and a timely hit by Kiersten Dixon. Jamie Stanclift was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved to second on a single by Lindsie Mitts. Dixon took ball three but dropped the bat and headed to first thinking it was ball four. Stanclift and Mitts started walking to third and second base, respectively.
Utah catcher Devina Quintero quickly threw to third to try and tag out Stanclift. Her throw went into left field allowing Stanclift to score and Mitts to move to third. Dixon returned to the batter's box and lined a single up the middle to give the Shockers a 2-1 lead.
The Utes took the lead back in the bottom of the sixth. Staci Hemingway walked and was replaced on the base paths by pinch runner Meghan Crouse. Crouse stole second followed by a walk issued to Quintero. Ashly Bright struck out Kara Foster for the second out of the inning. Angie Boardman then hit her second double of the day to score two runs.
Bright took the loss for WSU, going six innings and allowing three runs and striking out nine.
The Shockers will play either No. 22 Texas or Wisconsin at 5 p.m.
