CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The No. 47 Wichita State women's team dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 10 Miami Saturday in Coral Gables, Fla.
Laryssa Ferreira was the only Shocker to win a match. The freshman defeated Miami's Gina Sabatino in a 6-4, 7-6 (12) decision in the No. 6 singles match.
The Hurricanes swept the doubles competition, then won five of six singles matches in straight sets on their way to the 6-1 win. In doubles play, Anna Egorova and Lenore Lazaroiu dropped an 8-2 decision to the No. 31 doubles team of Caren Seenauth and Romy Farah in the No. 1 match. At No. 2 doubles, WSU's Stephanie Dalmacio and Laryssa Ferreira gave Laura Vallverdu and Bianca Eichkorn a run for their money, but came up just short in an 8-7 (4) contest, while Shockers Torrie Browning and Florentina Hanisch suffered an 8-4 setback to Gina Sabatino and Michaella Kissell.
Miami flexed its muscled in singles play, with four of its six singles players ranked nationally. In the No. 1 singles match, Stephanie Dalmacio was defeated by Miami's No. 14 Laura Vallverdu, 6-0, 6-2, while Anna Egorova dropped the No. 2 match to No. 70 Michaela Kissell in a 6-1, 6-3 decision. Meanwhile, in the No. 3 match, No. 80 Romy Farah of Miami defeated WSU's Lenore Lazaroiu, 6-1, 6-2, while No. 62 Bianca Eichkorn won the No. 4 point with a 6-4, 6-0 win over WSU's Torrie Browning.
Florentina Hanisch was the only Shocker to lose to a non-ranked Hurricane opponent, dropping a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Caren Seenauth.
With the loss, the Shockers fall to 1-3 on the season. They will be back in action Friday, Feb. 29, when they host Middle Tennessee State in a 1 p.m. match.
