Shocks Power Past New Mexico, 8-6

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- Wichita State (6-5) continued play in the Lobo Invitational with an 8-6 win Friday afternoon over New Mexico (4-4) at Lobo Field.

Katie McGeeney led off the game with her first home run of the season.  Heather Gerritse drove in two more runs in the inning with a double off of the base of the centerfield wall to give the Shockers a 3-0 lead.

After UNM scored two runs in the bottom of the inning, WSU picked up a run in the second as Lindsie Mitts walked and scored on a double by Britnee Barnett. Madelyn Machac put the Lobos up 6-4 in the second with a grand slam.

Freshman Kiersten Dixon led off the fourth with her first collegiate home run. Four batters later, Cynthia Verhulst gave WSU an 8-4 lead with a towering three-run homer to left field. The home run was her first of the young season.

After three innings of work in the circle by freshman Brianna Smet, Ashly Bright came in and pitched four innings of one-hit ball while striking out five.

The Shockers are back in action tomorrow as they take on Washington at 11 a.m. and Texas Tech at 6:30 p.m.
