WICHITA -- WSU's
Marisah Henderson narrowly missed a triple-double for the second-straight game but Kent State (8-1) connected shot 63-percent from three-point range en route to a 65-58 win over Wichita State (6-3) Wednesday night inside Charles Koch Arena.
Henderson finished with seven points, 11 assists and nine rebounds, while the Shockers were led by
Daria Frazier's season-best 17 points. The Golden Flashes were paced by Stephanie Gibson who had a season-high and tied a career-high with 18 points.
Jacie Hoyt sank the first three-pointer of the night to give WSU a 3-1 lead. Rachel Bennett answered Hoyt's trey with one of her own to regain the lead for KSU, but a pair of free throws by Sudbeck gave WSU a 5-4 lead in a wild exchange in the opening moments.
Five-straight points from
Daria Frazier pushed the Shocker lead to 10-6 by the 16-minute mark, capping a 7-2 Wichita State run fueled by great defensive plays and points in transition. WSU used a
Val Siemens three-pointer to take a 13-8 lead with just under 14-minutes left in the first half, as the Shockers opened the game 4-for-9 from the field against Kent State's 2-3 zone, while the Golden Flashes shot just 18-percent from the floor in the first 16 minutes.
Marisah Henderson picked up two charging calls and
Jadhon Kerr's three-pointer gave WSU an 18-11 lead with 10 minutes left in the first before a reverse layin by
Ashley Gladden capped a 13-5 run to give WSU a 23-13 lead, forcing KSU to call its first timeout with 8:45 left in the first.
WSU extended the lead to as many as 12 a minute later before Kent State closed the half on a 14-2 run to tie the game at the break, 27-27. The Shockers had just one field goal in the last eight minutes of the first as the lead evaporated and the Flashes put themselves right back into the game by intermission.
KSU wasted no time taking its first lead since early in the first half, getting a lay-in from Kowalska to grab a 29-27 advantage :21 seconds into the second.
The Shockers responded, taking a 32-31 lead on the strength of Siemens' third three-pointer of the night, but KSU matched Wichita State basket for basket as WSU could not build a lead.
Another Siemens' three-pointer capped a 7-2 Shocker run to tie the game at 39-39 with 12-minutes left to play. The teams traded baskets until Kowalska picked up her fourth foul with 8-minutes left, allowing WSU to tie the game at 47-47, thanks to a Sudbeck basket, with just under 7-minutes left to play.
Kent State got back-to-back three-pointers from Chenel Harris and Stephanie Gibson to take a 57-54 lead with 2:30 left. Bennett connected on a wide-open layup and a free throw to extend KSU's lead to 60-54 with less than two minutes left.
WSU responded with back-to-back baskets to close to within 60-58 with 1:30 left, but Harris connected on another three-pointer to dash the Shockers' hopes.
