DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Drake Bulldogs (9-4, 2-0) built a double-digit first half lead and Wichita State (6-8, 0-2) could not answer as the Shockers dropped their second-straight game with a 83-46 loss to the Bulldogs Sunday afternoon inside the Drake Knapp Center.
Kiki Stephens led the Shockers with 13 points while
Daria Frazier chipped in a season-high 12. WSU shot 40 percent on the day but allowed Drake to shoot 47 percent en route to WSU's second conference loss.
Drake's Jill Martin led four Bulldogs in double figures with a game-high 18 points.
The teams exchanged points early with both squads having hot hands from the field, as the Shockers and Bulldogs both shot better than 40 percent from the field in the first 10 minutes of the contest. Drake maintained the hot start using a near five-minute Shocker scoring drought to fuel a 7-0 run to break out to a 21-11 lead following a Kaniesha Agee runner with 8:53 left, helping DU to an early 10-4 advantage in the paint. Drake clung to a double-digit lead for the remainder of the half, extending to as many as 15 before the Shockers closed in with a late rally in the half to to a 36-23 deficit into the break.
The Shockers ended the first by outshooting the Bulldogs 45-percent to 42-percent, with the teams combining for a 2-for-14 effort from 3-point range.
Lindsay Whorton's first 3-pointer of the day with 17:15 left gave Drake a 42-25 advantage forcing the Shockers to use a timeout, and the Shockers could never recover as the Bulldogs used a big edge on the boards to keep the Shockers down by double-digits the remainder of the contest, extending the lead to as many as 38 down the stretch.
Wichita State returns to action at 7 p.m., Thursday against defending league champion Southern Illinois.
