No. 14 Cal Poly Sweeps WSU, 3-0

WICHITA, Kan. - Ali Waller and Ashleigh Bertoni combined for 26 kills and Cal Poly had 17.5 blocks as a team as the 14th-ranked Mustangs (2-1) swept Wichita State (1-2), 3-0, Sunday afternoon in the final match of the 2007 Best Western Volleyball Classic.

 

Waller and Bertoni each had 13 kills on the afternoon, leading all players along with Wichita State's Emily Stockman who had 13 as well. Cal Poly won by scores of 30-25, 30-23 and 30-24.

 

Abby Harsh led all players with 26 assists, but Jaclyn Houston's 10 block assists led a stout Mustangs defense that allowed the Shockers to hit just .021 for the match. Haley Fithian led Cal Poly with 23 assists while Kristin Jackson recorded a match-best 21 digs.

 

The teams raced out to a 12-12 tie in game one before a kill by Kylie Atherstone gave the Mustangs a 16-14 lead. The teams traded points until Cal Poly scored three straight to take a 22-19 lead. The Mustangs increased the lead to 25-20 on a kill by Gaby Rivera, but the Shockers pulled to within 26-24 behind the serving of Kayla Stout. Cal Poly ended game one on a 4-1 run to take a 30-25 win.

 

The Shockers took an early 7-4 lead in game two, but Cal Poly tied it at nine after a Shocker hitting error. The Mustangs increased the lead to 20-15 on a WSU error and reached game point at 29-23 on a kill by Ashleigh Bertoni. Cal Poly won game two 30-23.

 

The teams battled back and forth in game three until Cal Poly grabbed a 27-24 lead on a block. The Mustangs reached match point on a block and won game three 30-24 on a Shocker hitting error.

 

Wichita State returns to action next weekend at the Denver Invitational.
