Shocks Sweep Friday Doubleheader from Indiana State

Shocks Sweep Friday Doubleheader from Indiana State

4/6/2007 10:00:00 PM

WICHITA - It took Wichita State (20-24, 8-6) 11 innings to finally dent Indiana State's (15-17, 1-9) Darcy Wood, but a four-run fifth helped the Shockers clinch a conference doubleheader sweep over the Sycamores on a cold Friday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium.

The Shockers took game one, 1-0, in a classic pitcher's duel between Wood and Margo Pruis, before the Shocker bats finally came alive, using a four-run fifth to push back the Sycamores, 5-1 in the second game of the day. The teams are scheduled to wrap up the series with a single game at noon on Saturday.

Shockers 5, Indiana State 1
It took the Shockers just one batter to get the same number of hits off ISU starter Darcy Wood in game two as they totaled in game one, as Katie McGeeney led the second game off with a single up the middle. The Shockers' first baserunner of the game didn't last long as McGeeney was thrown out while trying to steal second, ending WSU's first threat of the second game.

WSU stranded two runners in the second as the Shockers continued to struggle with runners on base. Indiana State got its first hit of the game in the fourth as Meredith Simpson reached on a leadoff single and made it to third on a deep fly ball combined with a Shocker error, but Ashly Bright (5-9) prevented any damage by getting Stephanie Spychaj to ground out to end the threat.

Bright was more than efficient for the Shockers in the circle, giving up just three hits and one unearned run. She walked two and struck out eight in the winning effort, picking up her fifth Division I victory.

The battery haunted the Shockers in the fifth as a pair of walks and a three passed balls gave Indiana State its first run of the afternoon, as Lauren Kebely scored an unearned run on a passed ball to give the Sycamores their first lead of the day, 1-0.

The Shockers answered in the fifth in a big way, after back-to-back singles by Erin Peters and Bright gave the Shockers runners with no outs, and McGeeney drove the tying run in with a single up the middle, bringing Peters home from second to even the score 1-1. Senior Brooke Usher gave the Shockers the lead one batter later, with a two-out single through the right side that brought Bright home to give WSU a 2-1 lead. The two-out rally continued as Britnee Barnett bounced a double off the wall in center to bring home both McGeeney and Usher, extending the Shocker lead to 4-1.

Back-to-back singles to start the sixth chased Wood (8-13), as the Sycamore ace gave up four runs on nine hits in five innings of work, while walking one and striking out eight. Meagan McCurdy took over hurling duties inheriting two of Wood's baserunners after Stephanie De La Riva and Peters reached on singles. Lindsie Mitts brought in a fifth Shocker run when she slapped a McCurdy pitch through the right side, bringing De La Riva to the plate to give WSU a 5-1 advantage after six.

McCurdy worked the final inning, giving up just one hit, but the damage was done as the Shockers picked up their second-straight win, snapping a two-game slide.

Shockers 1, Indiana State 0
The Shockers struck first in game one when Katie McGeeney led the game off with a walk and later scored on a Stephanie De La Riva single up the middle, giving WSU a 1-0 lead after one.

Indiana State posed its first threat of the day in the fourth when the Sycamores loaded the bases with the aid of a walk and a hitter batter combined with a double by Katie Iocongeli. Starter Margo Pruis (11-11) got out of the jam though, getting Katie Armour to groundout to end the threat and the inning.

WSU wasted a pair of runners in the fourth, after Cynthia Verhulst walked and Stephanie De La Riva reached on a ground ball, giving the Shockers two runners on with no outs. The bottom half of the order could not advance them however, as ISU starter Darcy Wood (8-12) got a foul out and back-to-back strikeouts to end the Shocker threat in the fourth.

Indiana State threatened again in the sixth after leadoff hitter Meredith Simpson reached on a Shocker error, but the Sycamores could advance her no further, with Pruis striking out Ioconegeli to end the ISU sixth.

Pruis was stellar, allowing just two hits in the complete-game shutout, her first of the season. She walked one and struck out four on the afternoon. Wood got the tough-luck loss, striking out eight and allowing just one hit on the afternoon.
